Marsias, Yunan mitolojisinde yer alan Frigya kökenli bir saytrdir. Müziğin uyumunu yarattığı söylenen Hyagnis'in çocuğu olduğu bilinir.

Mitolojik hikâyeye göre, MÖ 4000 civarında, Tanrıça Athena, geyik kemiği üzerine (veya alternatif bir hikâyeye göre Büyük Menderes Nehri'nin kaynağında bulunan bir gölde büyüyen uzun kamışlar üzerine) delikler açar ve böylece ilk flütü yaratır. Kendi icadıyla gurur duyan Athena, bu flütü tanrılar önünde çalmak için onların ziyafetine katılır. Ancak ziyafette, flüt çalarken yüzünün aldığı biçimle Aphrodite ve Hera tarafından alay edilir.
