Athlete Throwing Discus (Discobolus)

The Diskobolos ("Discus thrower", Greek: Δισκοβόλος, Diskobólos) is a sculpture by Myron, completed in the early Classical period of Ancient Greece. The sculpture depicts an Ancient Greek athlete throwing the discus. Created in bronze by the sculptor Myron in 450 BC, the original has unfortunately not survived. However, numerous replicas of the work can be found in Rome. These copies were made of marble, a more economical material than bronze. The first surviving replica of the work, the Diskobolos of Palombara, is an example of a marble copy. More miniature bronze versions of the work also exist.
