Asklepios, (Greek Ἀσκληπιός, Latin Aesculapius) is known as the god of health and healing in Greek mythology. He is the son of Apollo and Koronis. He represents the healing aspect of medicine. The daughters of Asklepios are known as Hygieia (goddess of cleansing), Iaso (goddess of healing), Aceso (goddess of the healing process), Aglæa (goddess of health) and Panacea (goddess of universal remedy). He also has many sons.

He is described as the son of Apollo with his snake staff. According to the story, Koronis, the daughter of the King of Thessaly, had intercourse with the god Apollo and became pregnant by him. However, while carrying the god's child, she had intercourse with another stranger. The crow, his sacred bird, conveyed this news to the god. Apollo assigned his sister Artemis to punish Koronis. Artemis put the woman on a pile of pyres to be burned alive. The fire was so great that the crow's white feathers turned black from that day on. Apollo took the child from Koronis' belly and gave it to the centaur Chiron to raise.
